Practical Tips for Reducing Stress

We talk a lot about the stress that running a small business can create. In an ideal world stress wouldn’t be a concern, but if you do find yourself feeling overwhelmed with life, how do you cope? 

We’ve put together this guide of practical tips to help you manage and reduce stress once and for all. 

  1. Focus on work life balance

We cannot stress the important of maintaining a healthy work life balance. When you place too much attention on one area of your life, other areas often suffer and this is especially true for business owners. 

Remember to take a time out for yourself every once in a while. This can be as simple as scheduling in regular catch ups with friends, ensuring you make it to your kids sporting matches, taking time before bed to read a chapter of a novel or fitting in an exercise class for yourself. 

  1. Reach out for support

If you’re feeling stressed, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to go it alone. Reach out to close friends or talk to your GP about accessing a local counsellor. The important step here is that you don’t botte up your emotions and stress. 

  1. Make healthy choices

It’s very easy to turn to fast food or alcohol when stress starts to rise. People often turn to these for the quick fix they offer. But the fact is, in the longer term there is a high chance you’ll end up feeling worse than you did to begin with. 

Aim to make healthy choices wherever possible. 

This can be as simple as keeping healthy snacks like fruit or nuts nearby or getting into the habit of having a glass of water when you find your stress levels starting to rise. 

  1. Get enough sleep

This one should be pretty simple – most people cannot function their best or deal with everyday stressors when they’re sleep deprived. Aim for seven or eight solid hours of shut eye each night. After a few days, you’ll wonder how you ever survived on less.
