How to Set New Year’s Resolutions for Your Business

With 2017 drawing to a close, it’s time to start considering 2018 and how you can make it your best year yet.

Most people are familiar with setting new year’s resolutions for their personal life, but what about your business?

Just like your personal life, it’s important to reflect upon the year that has passed and take a few moments to figure out and plan how you can make the next even better.

We’ve put together our top advice for setting new year’s resolutions for your business below.

  1. Reflect on the year passed

Before you can set any new resolutions, you must reflect upon the year passed in relation to your business. Did you set goals at the start of the year? If so, did you achieve them? Are there areas you can improve?

Take a moment to sit down with a pen and paper and map out what your successes were and where you have room for improvement. These reflections will enable you to make more sustainable goals for 2018.

  1. Set measurable goals

There are many different ways to set goals or resolutions for your business. We recommend following the SMART system for it’s simple and measurable nature. After all, if you can’t measure your goals are they even real goals?

SMART goals are ones that are:

S – specific

M – measurable

A – attainable

R – realistic

T – time based

When writing out your goals in this formula, aim to make them as simple and clear as possible. They should define what you are going to achieve.

For example, you may have the overall goal of growing your business. A SMART goal breaks this down into achievable sections and describes how you will achieve the goal. For example, a SMART goal may look like this:

I will gain three new clients for my home organising business within three months by using social media groups, networking opportunities and approaching leaders within my local community for promotion opportunities. This will enable me to grow my business and increase my net income.

  1. Goal setting ideas

There are many different kinds of goals and your choices will be dependent on your personal circumstances and overall vision.

Some great ideas include: learning how to better manage cash flow, gaining new customers, increasing social media followings or reducing business costs.
