How to Prepare Your Home For Baby

Whether your due date is fast approaching or your planning to conceive, it’s always a good idea to prepare your home for baby.

We understand that it can be a daunting and complex task – ensuring that everything is just right – so we’ve compiled our favourite tips to make the journey that bit smoother.

Check the safety of your home

Having a baby in your home means a whole new bunch of safety concerns – which is why you need to babyproof. This can be done by taking a walk through every room in your home with a notepad and pen. Jot down any potential hazards so you have a reference point for later.

It can also be a good idea to get down on your hands and knees and look at the world from a small human’s height. This will uncover potential hazards our adult eyes often miss.

We recommend including cupboard, drawer, refrigerator and oven locks, safety gates for stairways and safety plugs for power points as a start.

Set up the nursery

Creating a nursery for your baby is one of the most exciting tasks new parents will encounter. You’ll have the safety items covered thanks to the point above, but now we’re talking about items that will make the nursery comfortable.

We always include a comfortable chair for nursing, along with large stockpiles of baby essentials. This includes bed linen, nappies – cloth or disposable, baby wipes, bibs, blankets and swaddles.

Ensure you have plenty of clothes

There is nothing worse than realising after the fact that you haven’t purchased enough baby clothes for your newborn. We understand that babies grow out of items fast, but it’s always a good idea to have a stash of extra clothes in a few sizes on hand. This can include simple grow suits to keep costs down, if that’s a worry for you.

Plan meals in advance

Along with preparing for baby, you need to prepare for motherhood. New mums are often run off their feet as they adjust to caring for their newborn. That’s why we love cooking a few weeks’ worth of meals in advance and placing in meal size freezer containers.

These can be defrosted and enjoyed each day, allowing valuable time to be spent bonding with baby!
