Take a moment to think about the last problem you faced. How did you solve it and were you successful?

Being able to make good decisions under pressure is important for all business people. Which is why we’re going to help you improve your problem-solving skills with this post.

  1. Develop strategic ways of thinking

Your brain is like any other muscle in your body, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Focus on developing strategic ways of thinking by keeping your brain active on a daily basis. Great activities include dancing, exercise, keeping an ideas journal or solving brain puzzles like Sudoku or crossword puzzles.

  1. Learn to identify problems

In order to utilise problem-solving skills, you must first be able to identify problems before and as they occur.

A great method for identifying problems is to be aware of the common problems that can arise in your area of business. Once you know what these are, you can keep an eye out for them and be ready with possible solutions.

  1. Focus on finding solutions

Problem-solving is best approached by brainstorming possible solutions for the problems at hand. We recommend using mind maps to visually work out problems and solutions.

You should also aim to have multiple solutions in mind in case your first preference doesn’t work out.

  1. Learn to ask for help

There will be time in business when you have to ask for help. Problem-solving is no exception. If you find yourself out of your depths focus on learning to ask for help.

Having a mentor or experienced business person on call is always a great idea!

  1. Turn the problem into an opportunity to learn

Finally, you should follow up and reflect on every problem you solve in business. If you’re not turning problems into learning opportunities you’re approaching the business world wrong.

Consider keeping a journal for reflections so you can refer back to them in the future.
