Moving to a new house is an exciting – yet chaotic time!
It’s also an opportunity to get yourself organised, once and for all. Which is why we’ve put together our guide for getting organised when moving house.
Keep your moving supplies in one place
We recommend creating a box or basket of commonly used items – this way you’ll have everything on hand and every family member will know where they belong.
Include items such as packing tape, scissors, labels and permanent markers.
Ensure you have enough boxes
It’s easy to underestimate how many boxes you’ll need – trust us when we say you’ll need a lot!
If you’re on a budget, consider looking on eBay for people selling used boxes. They’re generally in fantastic condition and it could save you a pretty penny!
Cull items as you pack
There is no easier time to get rid of excess belongings than when you’re packing for a move. Think of it this way, the less you own, the less you have to move! Sound good?
We recommend having three garbage bags on the go at all times. One for items to sell, another for charity and another to toss.
Then as you move from room to room you can place excess items in the corresponding bag.
When labelling boxes, it’s best to include the room they go in, along with a few examples of what the box contains. You don’t need to get into specifics, but it will make your life 100 times easier when you start trying to find one particular item.
Place boxes in the correct room
In order to make unpacking easier, place boxes in the correct room as soon as they’re unloaded from the moving truck. You’ll thank yourself in the long run for following this tip.
Do a second cull as you unpack
Chances are you weren’t as ruthless as you could have been when you packed up your old home. If you find yourself with excess belongings or more items than you can fit into your new home, consider removing some of these in the same sell, charity, toss system.
