You’re excited to begin home sorting. You rush out and purchase an assortment of organising products only to push them aside – into more clutter – when you realise, you’re unsure where to even begin.
If this sounds like you. We want you to know you’re not alone. Too often our clients tell us stories about excitement and the dread that follows when their home sorting journey doesn’t go to plan. That’s why we’re sharing the do’s and don’ts of home sorting with you.
Focus on one room at a time
It can be very tempting to rush into home sorting. You’re excited to have a picture perfect home, so you start sorting and decluttering three rooms at once – only to feel your motivation turn into dread as you realise how big of a task you have gotten yourself into. By focusing on one room at a time you are able to sort your home in stages and remain motivated.
Take your time
Like our point above, you will want to take your time when home sorting. In fact, it’s best to view the project as a marathon not a sprint. By dedicating time to the project, you’ll be sure to achieve your desired outcome and not have any regrets along the way.
Get your family involved
Home sorting doesn’t have to be a solo project. That’s right! We recommend getting your family members involved in decluttering their own belongings. This is especially great for children who have outgrown toys or teenagers who won’t want you in their bedroom. You may even choose to hold a family garage sale once you’re finished home sorting. Funds raised can be split evenly or used on a family experience.
Follow your gut instinct when decluttering
The number one question you can ask yourself when decluttering is: ’when was the last time I used this?’. This question can be a lifesaver if you are struggling to remove items or feel tempted to hold onto things just in case. Generally speaking, you’re going to forget about these items and wind up purchasing new ones when the need arises anyway!
Wait until the time is right
We hate to break it to you, but there will never be a perfect time to sort your home. You simply need to get started and there is no time like the present.
Try to sort clutter
It can be tempting to try and sort clutter within your home. We get it. But this is a massive NO when it comes to home sorting and one of the reasons why we encourage our clients to declutter their home first. Once you have decluttered the area you are sorting you will have a better idea of what needs to be organised and how you can do so.
Try and follow a system that doesn’t suit you
Just because you’ve seen a setup on Instagram or Pinterest doesn’t mean it will suit your lifestyle and needs. If you see yourself being swayed, read the last sentence again and start to think about what will work for you and your home.
