8 Tips To Control Clutter

If you’re looking for a way to control clutter within your home – you’re in for some good news. With a little bit of effort and determination you can take back control of your home and feel relaxed once again.

Want to know how? Here are eight ways to control clutter and help you live better without the mess.

Ensure every item has a space

Your first step towards a clutter free home is ensuring that every item has a space. A home. Somewhere to belong and be placed at the end of each day. While this may seem a little drastic to begin with, you will discover that putting items back where they belong simplifies your day and reduces mess.

Be wary of sales

Most of us love a sale, however, before you open your wallet take a moment to consider if what you’re purchasing is necessary. Are you buying another coat simply because it’s a bargain? Do you already have three almost-new ones hanging in your wardrobe? Each item you buy will have to find a home – so ask yourself, if you’re ready to do this?

Consider a ‘one in, one out’ rule for your home

If you can’t go past a sale, consider implementing a ‘one in, one out’ rule where for every new item you bring into the home you need to remove one existing item.

Donate or sell clothes you haven’t worn in the past year

Are you guilty of keeping clothes because you may need them eventually? This is no way to control clutter. Instead, aim to donate or sell clothes that you haven’t worn in the past year. You could even make this an annual tradition.

Don’t forget about email clutter

Clutter extends beyond the physical and includes email clutter, junk emails, and even desktop clutter on your computer. Be sure to spend a few minutes each week getting on top of your emails and files to ensure your electronic life stays sorted also.

Allow yourself a junk drawer

One drawer within your home where you can toss odds and ends without worry. Just be sure to keep it in a single drawer!

Do a quick tidy at the end of each day

Being able to control clutter often starts and ends with our habits. Get into the habit of doing a quick tidy at the end of each day to ensure your home remains free from clutter and everything is back where it belongs.

Make a start

Finally, while you may not be able to declutter your entire home in a day, what is most important is that you simply make a start. Use five or ten spare minutes as they pop up to declutter a single drawer or cupboard. Over time you’ll find your flow and move around your home until the project is complete and your clutter free home shines through.
