5 Reasons Your Home Is Full Of Clutter

Pretty much every home has some clutter – you may not even realise you have a problem.

We’re here to show you five reasons why your home may be full of clutter (trust us, they’re very common!) and the steps you can take to fix them.

Are you ready to get sorted?

  1. You’re always shopping for bargains

Do you find yourself browsing catalogues and sale sections of your favourite stores frequently? You’re not alone. Most people love a bargain and the endorphin rush it brings – but many people also don’t consider if the bargain they’re purchasing is simply going to add clutter to their home.

Next time you’re tempted by the lure of a red sale sign, take 12 to 24 hours to consider your purchase. You’ll be happy to wait the extra hours if it’s something that you genuinely want or need.

  1. You’re sentimental

When you walk around your home how many sentimental items can you see? Maybe you have your wedding dress tucked away for safe keeping – or perhaps you’re holding onto boxes of your children’s clothes and toys that they have long outgrown. For most people, the odd sentimental item (say, the wedding dress example above) won’t create clutter within the home. But when you struggle to get rid of anything, deep down you are bound to feel that there has to be a better way.

Consider a slow cull of sentimental items. Allow yourself to keep one box of sentimental goods in storage. This way, when the box is full you either need to part with the new item or remove another to create space.

  1. You always buy in bulk

If you have a large family, buying in bulk can be time and money saving – we know and support this. However, buying in bulk can become problematic when you find yourself surrounded by ‘large’ items that you’ve never going to get to the bottom of.

Try to be realistic the next time you’re faced with bulk purchases. Is this something your family will eat or use up before the best before it expires? If not, it may be worth opting for a smaller version.

  1. You’re a perfectionist

It may sound like an oxymoron, but perfectionists often live lives filled with clutter. This can be part due to procrastination or the idea that they can’t achieve a perfect home – so they never begin the decluttering process!

If this sounds like you, it pays to remember that every small step helps. You may not be able to declutter your entire home in a day but simply removing one item you no longer need each day will bring you closer to your goals in the long term.

  1. You don’t have an organisational system

Do you have a place for everything in your home? Or are you someone who chooses to wing it and spends hours each week searching for what they need? Let us tell you that the second option is no way to live.

Organisational systems don’t need to be difficult either. The best one is one that you know you’ll follow. This can be as simple as using drawer dividers to make it easier to find items, creating folders for important documents (both hard and electronic copies) or ensuring each new item you purchase is given a space to live – thus avoiding the build-up of clutter.
